Qnetlabs

Qnetlabs provides research for the solutions the Quarantainenet Group offers - this takes the form of doing vulnerability and exploit research, malware analysis, as well as antivirus solution comparisons. The Quarantainenet Group provides ISPs, Universities, schools and other institutions with network management and security solutions. As of September 2007, Qnetlabs has started offering its accumulated expertise and data to third parties.

Research into vulnerabilities and exploits

A key component of the solutions offered by the Quarantainenet Group is our in-house developed reactive honeypot. These honeypots are part of our vast honeypot network; through it, we gather ample data about possible new exploits "in the wild". Potential malicious traffic is continually being gathered and analysed in order to provide our honeypot with the latest threat and vulnerability information. The honeypot technology is an integral part of several Quarantainenet solutions, or offered as a stand-alone appliance with reporting capabilities. We kindly refer you to the Qdetect, Qmanage and Qnet solutions our sister company offers.

Malware analysis

Once we have discovered a hitherto unknown piece of malware, we set it loose in our in-house developed sandbox. During that time, we observe and log the steps the malware takes to propagate and/or deploy itself across a network. We are offering this sandbox as a standalone solution, allowing for malware testing and analysis within your own environment - the malware will remain inside your organisation and will not be relayed to our labs. Please contact us if you are interested in procuring our sandbox technology.

Malware subscription plan

Using the sandbox technology, we frequently discover malware that has not yet been incorporated into the latest AV definitions. We offer a subscription plan for AV developers to receive daily submittals of confirmed malware that their AV solution is unable to detect - feel free to contact us for details and pricing.

Antivirus solution comparison

We test the malware we gather against an array of antivirus products. Our aim in doing so is to provide a list of available tools to users of Quarantainenet Group solutions to facilitate remediation of their issues. We keep score on detection rates for the different antivirus solutions and present this information in both low- and high-detail reports. You may find a sample of the scores we are keeping on the right hand side of this page. A more elaborate explanation of our testing procedures is also available. Please contact us if you are looking to procure a more in depth analysis of the tested antivirus solutions; we offer both off-the-shelf and custom reporting.
